UK Updates UAE Travel Advice After Evacuation Flight Denial

Foreign Office Revises UAE and Dubai Travel Guidance Following Security Concerns

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has released updated travel advice for British nationals visiting the United Arab Emirates and Dubai. This revision comes in response to heightened security risks in the Middle East and a troubling incident involving a London family who were incorrectly denied access to an evacuation flight.

New Security Advisories and Registration Requirements

The FCDO has issued new information on how to register interest in UK government flights from the United Arab Emirates. In light of the ongoing regional tensions, the office advises: "Register your interest in UK government flights from United Arab Emirates." It further clarifies: "If you have had travel plans disrupted, you can register your interest in UK government flights from United Arab Emirates."

This update follows reports that Iran launched 16 ballistic missiles and over 117 drones in new barrages on Sunday, March 8. According to the UAE's Defense Ministry, all 16 missiles were intercepted, while a 17th fell into the sea. The ministry claims most drones were intercepted, but four landed in UAE territory, stating it is prepared to "firmly confront" these threats.

Consular Staff Dependents Temporarily Withdrawn

On March 9, the Foreign Office also updated its advisory concerning families of consular personnel. The notice states: "New information that as a precautionary measure the FCDO has decided to temporarily withdraw the dependants of British Embassy staff from the United Arab Emirates. Our embassies in Abu Dhabi and Dubai continue to operate as normal."

Travellers are being strongly advised not to go to the airport unless they have been contacted directly by the British consular team. This precaution aims to manage logistics and ensure safety during volatile conditions.

London Family Stranded After Evacuation Flight Denial

The situation in the Middle East, involving tensions between the USA and Iran, has led to a distressing case where a British family was stranded after being wrongly denied boarding on an evacuation flight from Oman. According to reports, Nusaybah Sattar, 26, from London, was in Dubai with her family before undertaking an eight-hour drive to Oman.

Upon arrival, they registered their presence with the UK government and were notified of a charter flight to London arranged by the Foreign Office for British nationals. However, they were denied boarding despite being British nationals with valid UK passports. The Home Office initially informed them they lacked appropriate visas for UK entry, which was incorrect.

Nusaybah expressed concerns about potential discrimination, stating: "If we had English names, I don't think there would have been an issue. There were other families there that weren't of our background and it was much easier for them to get on to the flight."

Government Response and Operational Challenges

A government spokesperson addressed the incident, explaining: "Our rapid deployment team has been working through the night to support British nationals through this distressing time. All passengers are told that eligibility checks must be completed before a seat can be confirmed, and that they should not travel to the airport unless contacted directly by our consular team. This kind of operation is logistically complicated and things can change quickly."

The updated travel advice emphasizes:

  • Registering interest in government flights if plans are disrupted
  • Avoiding airports without direct consular contact
  • Monitoring FCDO updates for new security information
  • Understanding that evacuation operations involve complex logistics

This incident highlights the challenges faced by British travelers in conflict zones and the importance of following official guidance during emergencies. The Foreign Office continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide further updates as necessary.
