Starmer endorses call for FIFA investigation

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has backed a FIFA investigation into Argentina's football team after players displayed a banner asserting Argentina's claim to the Falkland Islands following their World Cup semi-final victory over England. Downing Street confirmed Starmer's support for Business Secretary Peter Kyle's demand that FIFA examine whether rules were broken.

Banner displayed after Argentina's win

After Argentina's 2-1 victory in a tense match in Atlanta on Wednesday, several players held up a banner reading "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" (the Falkland Islands are Argentinian). The Falklands, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic, were the site of a 1982 war between the UK and Argentina that killed over 900 people.

Government response: Falklands are British

Starmer's spokesperson stated: "The World Cup might not be ours, but the Falkland Islands definitely are. Our position is unchanged. Self-determination rests with the islanders and our commitment to the Falklands will never waver." The spokesperson added that potential action is a matter for FIFA, but reiterated that "politics should stay out of football."

Business Secretary calls banner a violation

Peter Kyle told the BBC the banner was "an egregious violation of the rules of not having political activity as part of the football." He said: "The World Cup has one of its central tenets that politics is separate from football. That is now a matter for FIFA. I expect FIFA to do its investigation thoroughly."

Starmer's support for Spain in final

When asked who Starmer would support in Sunday's final between Argentina and Spain, his spokesperson said: "The PM wishes both teams well for the final, especially Spain."

Falkland Islands government reacts

The Falkland Islands government expressed disappointment, stating: "The banner displayed by Argentina last night was particularly insensitive for many people in the Falklands... We hope FIFA will make good on their promise to keep politics out of sport, and sanction all behaviour of this nature in line with its own rules."

HMS Medway incident adds tension

Argentina had previously complained that HMS Medway, a Royal Navy vessel, passed through its national waters without permission while sailing from the Falklands to Chile. Starmer's spokesperson rejected this, noting that the UK notified Argentina in advance and that the Royal Navy operates in full compliance with international law.
