A devastating wave of Russian drones has struck civilian areas across Ukraine, marking the onset of Vladimir Putin's spring offensive. The attacks, which occurred in a rare daylight assault, resulted in the deaths of six individuals, including a child, and left at least 46 people injured. Officials confirmed that the onslaught targeted multiple cities, with significant damage inflicted on cultural and residential sites.
Lviv UNESCO Site Destroyed in Daylight Attack
In the western city of Lviv, near the Polish border, a drone strike set fire to the historic St. Andrew's Church, a 17th-century structure that is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko reported the destruction, highlighting the attack's impact on Ukraine's cultural heritage. The assault on Lviv also hit an apartment block, injuring 13 people, as regional officials detailed the widespread civilian casualties.
Widespread Drone Assault Across Ukraine
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated on social media that Russia launched swarms of Iranian-designed Shahed drones, targeting at least seven cities. In the central city of Dnipro, daytime strikes injured 13 people, including three children. Meanwhile, in Ivano-Frankivsk, the attack damaged maternity hospitals and approximately ten apartment buildings, according to Svitlana Onyshchuk, head of the regional military administration. She confirmed two fatalities and four injuries, one involving a six-year-old child.
Escalation of Russian Spring Offensive
The drone barrage comes as Moscow intensifies its military efforts, firing nearly 400 long-range drones overnight in what represents the largest attack in weeks. General Oleksandr Syrskyi, commander-in-chief of Ukraine's armed forces, reported that Russian troops have made simultaneous attempts to break through defensive lines in several strategic areas. He noted that fierce fighting has unfolded along the entire contact line, with Russia launching 619 attacks over four days.
General Syrskyi warned that occupiers are attempting to bring up new units and prepare for continued assaults, prompting Ukraine to deploy reinforcements to counter the offensive. The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank, supported this assessment, indicating that Russia's spring-summer offensive is now underway, with escalated strikes and increased troop movements to the front line since March 17.
Context of the Ongoing Conflict
Ukrainian civilians have endured relentless barrages since Russia's full-scale invasion over four years ago. Despite US-brokered talks, no respite has been achieved, as Russia rejected Ukraine's ceasefire offer. The recent Iran war has further diverted international attention from Ukraine's plight. On the roughly 1,250-kilometer front line, Ukraine's short-handed defenders brace for new offensives by Russia's larger army as weather conditions improve.
Each year, as the weather improves, Russia escalates its grinding war of attrition. However, it has been unable to capture major cities, making only incremental gains in rural areas. Currently, Russia occupies about 20% of Ukraine, including the Crimean Peninsula seized in 2014. In response, Ukraine has developed advanced drone technology to compensate for infantry shortages, continuing its defense against the ongoing aggression.
