Russia has unleashed a significant drone and missile assault on Ukraine's two major urban centres, Kyiv and Kharkiv, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries. This aggressive military action coincided with the second day of tripartite peace negotiations involving the United States, Ukraine, and Russia, which are being held in the United Arab Emirates.

The attacks occurred early on Saturday, with officials reporting that one person was killed and at least fifteen others were wounded in Kyiv alone. The strikes persisted until morning, exacerbating an already severe energy crisis in the region. Many residents in Kyiv are currently experiencing widespread outages of heat, water, and power, following previous Russian attacks on critical energy infrastructure.
Impact on Kyiv's Infrastructure and Residents
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the casualties in a social media post, noting that four individuals were wounded, with three requiring hospitalisation. Fires erupted in several buildings after being struck by drone debris, further disrupting essential services in parts of the capital. Klitschko highlighted that approximately 1,940 residential buildings remain without heating due to recent attacks, warning that the situation may deteriorate further.
According to reports from Klitschko's office, around 600,000 residents have temporarily evacuated the city during the January power crisis, which has plunged entire neighbourhoods into darkness. Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration, indicated that strikes affected at least four districts, damaging a medical facility among other structures.
Kharkiv Targeted in Prolonged Drone Assault
In Kharkiv, located just 30 kilometres from the Russian border, Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that 25 drones struck several districts over a two-and-a-half-hour period, injuring at least fourteen people. The drones hit a dormitory for displaced individuals, a hospital, and a maternity hospital, as detailed in Terekhov's Telegram post. Kharkiv has been a frequent target in the conflict, given its proximity to Russian territory.
Context of Ongoing Energy and Humanitarian Crises
These latest attacks come as Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities grapple with a worsening mid-winter energy crisis. Many residents have been left without heat and power for extended periods, with emergency workers struggling to restore services amid freezing overnight temperatures that can drop to –13°C (9°F). This marks the third mass overnight attack on Kyiv this year, each exacerbating the humanitarian and infrastructural challenges.
