A Russian drone struck an apartment block in the Romanian city of Galati, injuring several people and prompting calls for Nato Article 4 consultations. The incident, which occurred in the eastern city, marks a significant escalation as Romania is a member of Nato.
Romania Condemns Attack
The Romanian foreign ministry described the event as a 'serious and irresponsible escalation on the part of the Russian Federation.' Foreign Minister Oana Toiu stated that the incident should trigger Nato Article 4, which allows member states to request an emergency meeting when they perceive a threat to their security.
Previous Incursions
This is not the first time Russian drones have entered Nato airspace. In September 2025, dozens of drones entered Polish airspace, prompting Nato and the Polish Air Force to scramble fighter jets. The repeated violations have raised concerns about the security of Nato's eastern flank.
International Reaction
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the attack, saying Russia had 'crossed another line.' In a post on X, she stated: 'We stand in full solidarity with Romania and its people. As we continue strengthening our security and deterrence, especially on our eastern border, we will keep increasing the pressure on Russia.'
Romanian Brigadier General Maxim explained that the drones breached defences for a very short time and flew below radar capabilities. He noted that the US anti-drone system Merops is operational but has not yet been integrated into the national defence system.
The attack has intensified calls for stronger defensive measures along Nato's eastern border, with allies expected to discuss the situation in an emergency meeting under Article 4.
