Metropolitan Police Officers Face Criminal Charges in Fatal High-Speed Crash
Two Metropolitan Police officers have been formally charged following a devastating crash that claimed the life of a heavily pregnant woman and her unborn baby in southeast London. The tragic incident occurred on October 17, 2024, when an unmarked police vehicle collided with Mariam Ahmed, a 38-year-old woman who was just weeks away from giving birth.
Details of the Fatal Collision on Eltham Road
The fatal crash took place on Eltham Road, where the police vehicle involved was reportedly traveling at approximately 80 miles per hour in a 40 mph zone. According to evidence presented at an inquest last year, the officer was overtaking traffic while pursuing a rider on a stolen motorcycle. The collision resulted in the immediate death of Mariam Ahmed and her unborn child, a heartbreaking loss that has deeply affected her family and the local community.
Criminal Charges Against Current and Former Officers
PC Chris Johnson, 56, the driver of the primary police vehicle involved in the collision, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving. Meanwhile, former PC Danny Tomkins, 35, who was operating a second unmarked vehicle during the incident, faces charges of dangerous driving related to the standard of his driving. Both individuals are scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on May 28 to answer these serious allegations.
Investigation by Independent Police Watchdog
The charges stem from a comprehensive investigation conducted by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which initiated its probe after receiving a mandatory referral from the Metropolitan Police. The IOPC completed its investigation in October 2025 and subsequently referred the case file to the Crown Prosecution Service for review and potential prosecution.
Malcolm McHaffie, head of the Crown Prosecution Service's special crime division, stated: 'Following a thorough review of the evidence in this case, we have authorized criminal charges against one current and one former police officer. Our prosecutors have worked diligently to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring this case to court and that pursuing criminal proceedings is firmly in the public interest.'
Community Response and Ongoing Grief
Acting Detective Chief Superintendent James Derham, who leads policing in the Greenwich area, expressed profound sympathy for the victim's family. He remarked: 'Our thoughts remain with the woman's family and friends, who continue to grieve the loss of her and her unborn child. This was a truly terrible and heartbreaking incident that has left a lasting impact on all those involved.'
The case highlights critical questions about police pursuit protocols and road safety measures during high-speed operations in urban areas. As the legal proceedings move forward, the Metropolitan Police face increased scrutiny regarding their operational procedures and accountability mechanisms.
