Three Men Deny Terrorism Charges Over Alleged ISIS Travel Plot
Three young men have pleaded not guilty to charges of planning to travel to Syria to join the so-called Islamic State (IS), with prosecutors alleging they used a WhatsApp group chat titled 'Lads Holiday' to coordinate their activities. Chafik Aziz, 18, Muhammed Bham, 19, and Oliver Rea, 24, entered their pleas at the Old Bailey on Friday before Judge Mark Lucraft KC.
Alleged Preparations for Terrorism
The defendants are accused of engaging in conduct in preparation of acts of terrorism between March and November 2025. According to the charges, they allegedly carried out extensive research, including studying the clothing worn by IS fighters, territory held by IS, and methods to avoid detection and arrest. Prosecutors claim they wrote goodbye letters to family members, booked flights to Turkey, acquired or renewed passports, sold personal belongings, and resigned from their jobs as part of their preparations.
It is further alleged that the trio joined group chats on the encrypted messaging app Signal, with names such as 'AirBNB Buddies' and 'Lads Holiday', where they encouraged each other to join Islamic State. The charge sheet states they researched the equipment, kit, and weapons required for their trip, as well as where and how to obtain them, while also securing new passports and funds.
Additional Charges for Social Media Activity
Oliver Rea admitted to two counts of inviting support for IS on TikTok and two more charges of expressing support for Al Qaida and IS on the social media platform. However, he denied three further charges related to the dissemination of terrorist documents on TikTok. This highlights the role of online platforms in the alleged activities.
Court Proceedings and Future Hearings
During the hearing, Aziz stood in the dock, Rea appeared via videolink from Belmarsh prison, and Bham participated from Doncaster jail. At the conclusion of the session, Aziz waved and blew a kiss to his co-defendants. Judge Lucraft scheduled a further hearing for May 15, with the trial set to begin at the Old Bailey on November 30. All three defendants were remanded into custody.
The accused individuals are from various locations across the UK: Aziz is from Wallington in south London, Bham hails from Dewsbury in Yorkshire, and Rea is from Arnold in Nottinghamshire. The case underscores ongoing concerns about terrorism recruitment and planning through digital communication channels.
