Driver Reverses with Officer Hanging On in Drug Stop

Shocking Footage Captures East London Driver's Reckless Escape Attempt

Dramatic video evidence has emerged showing the moment a driver from East London reversed his vehicle while a police officer desperately clung to its side during a drug-related stop in Suffolk. The incident, which occurred on November 8 last year, resulted in the driver receiving a four-year prison sentence for multiple offenses.

Dangerous Confrontation During Routine Stop

Josef Zielinski, 33, of Arboretum Place in Barking, was stopped by Suffolk Police in Sudbury on suspicion of drug dealing. A marked police car pulled in front of his vehicle, and two officers approached—one speaking through the open driver's door and the other positioned by the front passenger door.

Without warning, Zielinski reversed his car, forcing PC Owen Turner, who had opened the driver's door, to jump into the vehicle and hang onto its side for safety. The other officer was knocked over and dragged by the reversing vehicle, creating a perilous situation that could have ended in tragedy.

Officer's Harrowing Experience and Immediate Aftermath

PC Turner described fearing for his life during the incident, stating he believed his colleague might have been seriously injured or killed. The car only stopped when it crashed into a stationary vehicle behind it. Despite Turner turning off the ignition, Zielinski reactivated the vehicle before being forcibly removed and detained by police.

During the struggle, police later discovered that Zielinski had discarded 10 wraps of cocaine under the vehicle. Both officers sustained only minor injuries, a fortunate outcome given the dangerous circumstances.

Legal Consequences and Sentencing

At an earlier hearing, Zielinski admitted to:

  • Possession of cocaine with intent to supply
  • Dangerous driving
  • Two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm
  • Criminal damage

On February 6, Ipswich Crown Court sentenced him to four years in prison and imposed a three-year driving ban. The court considered the severity of his actions, which showed complete disregard for officer safety.

Video Evidence and Lasting Impact

The entire incident was captured on police body-worn cameras and dash camera footage from the vehicle that was struck during the reversal. PC Turner emphasized that what began as a routine vehicle stop turned into a life-threatening situation he will never forget.

"What Zielinski did showed his only desire was to escape, with no regard for anyone other than himself," Turner stated. "This is something that I will never forget and it will stay with me forever."

The case highlights the dangers police officers face during routine stops and serves as a stark reminder of the consequences for those who choose to endanger lives while attempting to evade justice.
