Derby Car-Ramming Suspect Arrested After Pedestrian Attack in Friar Gate

A 36-year-old man remains in police custody following a shocking car-ramming incident in Derby that left seven pedestrians with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The attack occurred on Saturday evening at approximately 9:30 PM in the bustling Friar Gate area, a popular nightlife spot.

Swift Police Response and Arrest Details

Derbyshire Police reported that the suspect, a Derby resident originally from India with long-term UK residency, was arrested just seven minutes after the incident on the other side of the city centre in Station Approach. He faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, causing serious injury through dangerous driving, inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, and dangerous driving.

Chief Superintendent Emma Aldred, who leads policing in Derby, praised eyewitnesses for their crucial role in the swift arrest. "This swift action would not have been possible without eyewitnesses who contacted us about the vehicle’s whereabouts as it was driven away from the scene and around the city centre," she stated at a media briefing on Sunday.

Chaotic Scene and Eyewitness Accounts

CCTV footage obtained by the Daily Mail captured a black Suzuki Swift racing down the road moments after the collision, with several victims lying on the ground. Witnesses described scenes of utter chaos and distress.

Blake Pierce, a 21-year-old local, was out with friends when he heard screaming. "We weren’t sure what to think and just froze. I could count about 6 people sprawled out pretty widespread across the area," he told Metro. He added that bystanders rushed to help before emergency services arrived, noting the police response time was "good."

Eren Celebi, a 23-year-old worker at FG Express on Friar Gate, recounted, "I didn’t see it exactly happen. I was serving some customers and I just heard a lot of screaming and shouting outside." He described seeing victims with head injuries and blood on the pavement and road.

Another anonymous witness estimated that between 80 to 130 people were on the road after the incident, calling it "quite distressing" with "a lot of bloodied people." He noted the presence of numerous ambulances and paramedics providing care amidst the chaos.

Investigation and Official Statements

Counter-terrorism police are assisting in the investigation, but authorities have emphasized they are keeping an open mind about motives. The incident is not currently being classified as terrorism. Chief Superintendent Aldred assured the public that this appears to be an isolated incident with no wider risk.

The Home Secretary is being kept updated on the situation, as confirmed by Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson. The community remains in shock, with Pierce reflecting, "I’ve always found Derby to be a good night out, nothing really happens here from what I’ve experienced. It was a real shock to see something so graphic right in-front of you."

All seven injured individuals were treated at the scene and subsequently transported to hospital for further medical attention. The investigation continues as police piece together the events leading up to this violent attack in Derby's city centre.
