President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the European Union on Tuesday, calling for tangible progress on Ukraine's accession talks and stronger measures against Russia. Speaking during Ireland's presidency of the EU, Zelenskyy emphasized the bloc's responsibility to deliver on its commitments.
EU's Opportunity and Responsibility
Zelenskyy wished Ireland success during its presidency and stated: "When we face many other challenges both in international affairs and at the national level across Europe, the EU has an opportunity and a responsibility to be a force that brings more stability, more productivity, and basic respect for human life, the kind of life everyone wants for themselves, their children, and their families."
Push for Drone Deal and Anti-Russia Measures
The Ukrainian leader expressed hope that under Irish leadership, the EU would make "real progress on the drone deal that Ukraine has proposed" and support steps that make it harder for Russia to continue the war. He also pointed to areas where the EU could tighten rules to increase pressure on Moscow, including further restrictions on EU companies still doing business with Russia.
Opening Accession Clusters
Zelenskyy urged the EU to open more accession clusters between Ukraine and the bloc to advance toward membership. "Steps like opening new clusters strengthen the motivation of our people, lift the spirit of Ukrainians and show that the EU keeps its promises. It is so important to keep promises and that is exactly how it should be," he said.
His speech received warm applause from the audience.
