A former accountancy student has shared fond memories of Sir Jeremy Hanley, the late Conservative MP and minister, recalling his kindness and humour during a course in Jersey in the early 1970s.
Encounter in Jersey
In a letter to the editor, the student described meeting Hanley while marooned on the island for a two-month accountancy course. Hanley, then a future politician, showed great kindness and support to those who got into scrapes in the tax-free environment.
The writer, who struggled with numeracy, noted Hanley's particular understanding of his difficulties. “My fondest memory is of his lectures, which were often delivered with hilarious and perfectly timed jokes,” the letter states.
