Farage admits Reform UK broke election spending rules

Nigel Farage has admitted that Reform UK broke election spending rules, stating that the party made an administrative error in declaring a £5m gift from a donor. The admission comes after the Electoral Commission launched an investigation into the party's finances.

Farage admits error in donor declaration

Speaking to reporters in Clacton, Farage said: "We made an administrative error. We should have declared it, and we didn't. It's that simple." He added that the party would cooperate fully with the investigation.

The £5m donation came from a businessman who has not been named publicly. Under UK law, political parties must declare any donation over £7,500 within 30 days of receiving it. Reform UK failed to do so.

Electoral Commission investigation

The Electoral Commission confirmed it is investigating the matter. A spokesperson said: "We are aware of the issue and are looking into whether there has been a breach of the rules." The commission has the power to impose fines or refer the case to the police.

This is not the first time Reform UK has faced scrutiny over its finances. In 2024, the party was fined for failing to submit its accounts on time.

Political fallout

Labour MP Lisa Nandy said: "This shows that Reform UK cannot be trusted with public money. They have broken the rules and must face the consequences."

Farage dismissed the criticism, saying: "This is a minor administrative issue, not a scandal. The Labour Party is trying to distract from its own failures."
