Man allegedly raped near Pells Pool, Lewes, on Christmas Eve

Police have launched a major investigation following an alleged rape of a man in the historic town of Lewes, East Sussex, over the Christmas period.

Details of the Christmas Eve Assault

The incident is reported to have occurred near the town's renowned Pells Pool, a public outdoor swimming baths. The assault is said to have taken place between 10pm on Christmas Eve and 3am on Christmas Day.

The victim, a man believed to be in his thirties, is currently receiving support from specialist police officers trained in dealing with such traumatic events. Authorities have confirmed that an increased police presence will remain in the area as enquiries continue.

Historic Location and Police Appeal

The alleged attack happened close to one of Lewes's most cherished landmarks. Pells Pool, originally built in 1860, is the oldest freshwater outdoor public swimming baths still in operation in the United Kingdom.

Detective Inspector Gavin Patch is leading the investigation. He stated: "Following the launch of this investigation, we would like to reassure the public that a dedicated team continues to work diligently to explore all available lines of enquiry."

He confirmed that officers will be highly visible in several parts of the town as part of their work, including:

  • The Pells Pool and Brook Street areas.
  • Around Eastgate Street and Lansdown Place.

Public Urged to Assist Investigation

Detective Inspector Patch made a direct appeal to the public for assistance. "Members of the public can also play a vital role in helping us build a clearer picture of events, whether they are local residents or were visiting the area," he said.

Police are specifically asking:

  • Anyone who was in Lewes on Christmas Eve night and witnessed anything suspicious.
  • Individuals or drivers with any dashcam, CCTV, or mobile phone footage from the area.
  • Anyone with any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to make contact.

"If you think you can help in any way, it is important that you contact police," Detective Inspector Patch emphasised.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
