Tragic Incident in Redcar Leads to Arrest
A 45-year-old man has been arrested after a three-month-old baby girl died in a suspected dog attack in Dormanstown, Redcar, Yorkshire. The tragic incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, prompting a swift response from emergency services.
Police Response and Details
Cleveland police were called to a house in the Dormanstown area shortly after 1:30 PM following a report expressing concern for the welfare of a child. Upon arrival, officers discovered that the infant had succumbed to injuries believed to be from a dog bite.
In addition to the baby's death, a 31-year-old woman was treated at a hospital for an arm injury sustained from a dog bite during the same incident. The situation escalated when one dog escaped onto the street, leading armed police to destroy the animal. A second dog was recovered by authorities and has since been euthanized.
Investigation and Community Impact
The arrested man was taken into custody on suspicion of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control, resulting in death. After questioning, he was released on conditional bail as the investigation continues. Police have confirmed that the dogs involved were assessed by a specialist and were not deemed to be of a prohibited breed, though neighbors described them as pocket bully-type dogs, possibly crossbreeds.
Ch Supt Rachel Stockdale, head of local policing at Cleveland police, expressed condolences, stating, "Our thoughts continue to be with the child’s family following this tragic and distressing incident." She urged the public to respect the family's privacy and appealed for any information or footage, such as from mobile phones, doorbells, or dashcams, to assist in the ongoing inquiry.
Emergency Services Deployment
The North East Ambulance Service dispatched a significant response team to the scene, including three ambulance crews, one clinical team leader, and one duty officer. This highlights the severity of the situation and the coordinated effort to address the emergency.
As the investigation proceeds, a police presence remains at the property, and authorities are working to piece together the events leading to this heartbreaking outcome. The community has been left in shock, with residents recounting the chaotic scene of a dog "running up and down the street" after the attack.
