Man and Police Officer Hospitalized After Dramatic Edgware Road Shop Fire Rescue
A man was rushed to hospital after being trapped inside a burning shop on Edgware Road in Paddington during the early hours of Thursday, April 9, 2026. In a dramatic rescue operation, a police officer was also injured and taken to hospital, with both individuals sustaining non-life-threatening injuries according to authorities.
Fire Erupts in Multi-Story Building
The blaze broke out at approximately 3:35am, tearing through a ground-floor shop and spreading to parts of the first and second-floor flats above it. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) received the first of eight emergency calls at 3:36am, prompting an immediate and substantial response.
Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were dispatched from stations including Paddington, Soho, Kensington, and North Kensington to tackle the intense flames. The fire was brought under control by 4:53am, but not before causing significant damage to the commercial and residential spaces.
Dangerous Gas Cylinder Situation
During firefighting operations, crews located a gas cylinder on the first floor of the building. Recognizing the potential for explosion when exposed to heat, firefighters removed and cooled the cylinder to an ambient temperature as a critical safety precaution. This action prevented what could have been a catastrophic secondary incident.
Police-Led Rescue Operation
Metropolitan Police officers on patrol were flagged down at around 3:45am regarding the fire. Upon arrival, they discovered the 36-year-old man trapped inside the burning shop and immediately alerted both the London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade.
In a brave rescue attempt, police officers entered the building to extract the trapped man. During this hazardous operation, one police officer sustained injuries and required hospital treatment alongside the rescued shop occupant. Both individuals have been assessed with injuries that are not life-threatening or life-changing.
Emergency Medical Response
The London Ambulance Service responded with multiple resources including ambulance crews, incident response officers, an advanced paramedic, a clinical team manager, and paramedics from their hazardous area response team (HART). Medical personnel treated one patient who was transported to hospital and assessed another individual who was discharged at the scene.
Investigation Ongoing
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by authorities, with no arrests made at this time. Police have asked anyone with information to contact them on 101, quoting reference CAD902/09APR26. The incident highlights the coordinated emergency response capabilities across London's fire, police, and ambulance services during critical incidents.
