An innocent Tube passenger was left needing surgery after being battered in a random attack aboard a Victoria line train, police have confirmed. The assault took place between Stockwell and Vauxhall at around 11:10am on Friday, July 10, when an unidentified thug launched a brutal and unprovoked attack on a man who did not know his attacker.
Victim kicked repeatedly in legs, stomach and arms
The victim was repeatedly kicked in his legs, stomach and arms during the incident, which occurred in the middle of the day. He was taken to hospital, where the severity of his injuries became apparent. According to British Transport Police (BTP), the injuries were so serious that he required surgery on his leg.
BTP Constable Robert Jeavons described the attack as "entirely unprovoked," noting that the victim was "just going about his day." He added: "The injuries he sustained were so serious that he required surgery on his leg."
Witnesses and intervening passengers sought
Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward, particularly those who were inside the carriage at the time of the assault. Several people reportedly intervened, and officers are keen to speak to anyone who saw what happened or has any information.
Constable Jeavons urged: "There were a number of people inside the carriage at the time of the assault, some of whom thankfully intervened. If that was you or you saw what happened, please get in touch with us by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 166 of 10 July."
Suspect description: South Asian, mid-to-late twenties, six feet tall
The suspect is described as South Asian, in his mid-to-late twenties, approximately six feet tall, with a medium build and a full black beard. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a black baseball hat, a blue t-shirt, and black shorts, and was carrying a black backpack and a sling bag. He was reportedly accompanied by a woman.
The attack is one of several incidents on London's transport network recently. In a separate case, officers are investigating an assault at Acton Underground station, where a man slapped a bystander after tailgating through the ticket barriers. The victim was also shoved and followed to a nearby shop before the assault.
