Radiographer struck off for filming colleagues at hospital

Matthew Izett, a radiographer at the Royal Marsden Hospital in South Kensington, has been struck off the professional register after a tribunal found he secretly filmed three female colleagues while they were changing. The panel concluded his behaviour was "grossly inappropriate" and that no lesser sanction would protect the public.

Incident in June 2024 led to investigation

The case came to light on June 21, 2024, when a female radiographer, referred to as Colleague C, entered an office to change out of her scrubs before going home. She found Izett sitting in the office and asked him to leave. After he did, she discovered a telephone in a cubbyhole below a desk, which was recording the room. She immediately reported the incident to her manager, prompting an investigation.

The investigation revealed two earlier incidents. Colleague A and Colleague B believed Izett had tried to film them while changing in May 2021 and June 2021 respectively. In each case, the colleagues found Izett's phone hidden in the room, positioned so the camera faced the area where they changed. Both confronted him, but he reportedly made excuses such as "oh, it's nothing" before taking the phone and leaving. They reported the incidents to their service manager, who advised them not to change in that room. No further action was taken until 2024.

Panel finds sexual gratification motive

When questioned, Izett said he did not recall anything from 2021 regarding the first incident and claimed "nothing had been recorded" for the second. For the 2024 incident, he argued that leaving his phone on record in the cubbyhole was a mistake. However, the panel ruled on the balance of probabilities that all three colleagues were filmed without permission for Izett's sexual gratification.

Izett worked at the Royal Marsden Hospital between 2016 and 2024. He was dismissed in September 2024 following the investigation.

Striking off order issued

In its final report, the panel stated: "The Registrant’s behaviour was inconsistent with continued professional registration, no lesser sanction would sufficiently reassure the public of the grossly inappropriate nature of that behaviour, and nothing short of striking off would send the required message to other registrants. For those reasons, the Panel is satisfied that a striking off order is a proportionate response."

The striking-off order means Izett can no longer practise as a radiographer in the UK. The Royal Marsden Hospital has not commented publicly on the case.
