Harvey Weinstein hospitalized with heart failure

Disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, 74, was rushed to Bellevue Hospital Prison Ward in Manhattan this week after suffering acute heart failure while incarcerated at Rikers Island in Queens, New York. He had been awaiting sentencing for his 2025 sexual assault conviction when the medical emergency occurred.

Health complications and hospitalisation

Sources confirmed that Weinstein had been battling pneumonia prior to experiencing heart failure. After he had difficulty breathing, he was transferred to the hospital, where he continues to receive treatment. While reports indicate he is recovering, he is not yet cleared for release.

This is not the first time Weinstein has required urgent medical care while in custody. In 2024, he was taken to the same hospital unit after what his lawyer described as an 'alarming' blood test result, citing 'a lack of adequate medical care and enduring deplorable and inhumane conditions on Rikers Island'.

Medical history and cancer diagnosis

Weinstein has been diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia, a form of bone marrow cancer, which was revealed in 2024. He also has a history of other health issues, including previous hospitalisations related to his condition.

In early January, it was reported that Weinstein was considering a guilty plea deal, describing prison as a 'death march'. 'I know I was unfaithful, I know I acted wrongly, but I never assaulted anyone,' he told the court earlier this year. 'The isolation is unbearable. My body is failing,' he added, calling Rikers 'a slow march toward death'.

Background of allegations and legal proceedings

Weinstein has been at the centre of rape or sexual misconduct allegations from more than 100 people, with some claims dating back to the 1970s. These allegations sparked the Me Too movement, which highlighted sexual violence in the film industry and worldwide. He has denied all allegations against him.

He was previously handed a 23-year prison sentence in 2020, but this was overturned by the Court of Appeal in a shocking development. He is currently awaiting sentencing for his 2025 sexual assault conviction.
