EastEnders is set to tackle a blood cancer storyline as Denise Fox, played by Diane Parish, receives a diagnosis of acute myeloid leukaemia in upcoming scenes. The character has been struggling with persistent fatigue, prompting her to visit a doctor after Sam Mitchell (Kim Medcalf) discovered her asleep at work.
Health Concerns and Diagnosis
In tonight's episode, Denise revealed a possible iron deficiency, though Sam noted that confirmation would require test results. Later this month, Denise will be diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia, a type of blood cancer. The storyline will explore the impact of this diagnosis on Denise and her loved ones over the coming months.
Collaboration with Blood Cancer UK
To ensure accuracy and sensitivity, EastEnders worked closely with Blood Cancer UK. Helen Rowntree, CEO of Blood Cancer UK, stated: 'It's been a privilege advising the EastEnders team to ensure Denise's storyline reflects the real experiences of people living with blood cancer and those who care for them.' She added that blood cancers do not discriminate, but outcomes can vary by ethnicity, and being Black with an aggressive blood cancer like AML brings additional challenges.
Executive producer Ben Wadey emphasized the importance of portraying the storyline with care: 'It was vital to us that Denise's storyline is portrayed with sensitivity and care, and we're grateful to Blood Cancer UK for their advice in helping us tell this story accurately.' He hopes viewers will gain a greater understanding of the realities of an AML diagnosis.
