A woman narrowly escaped a fire that engulfed a 21-storey building in Berlin, Germany, by jumping from an 11th-floor window into a rescue basket. The dramatic rescue unfolded on the morning of August 16, 2026, after a blaze broke out on a balcony of a block of flats on Straße der Pariser Kommune in the Friedrichshain district.
Fire breaks out in the early morning
The fire was reported at around 6:27am local time, originating on the balcony of an 11th-floor flat. Footage captured the resident dangling from the window, approximately 35 metres above the ground, as flames roared from the adjacent window. The woman remained hanging from the ledge as firefighters arrived at the scene, according to the fire service, which spoke to German national broadcaster rbb24.
However, the crew's aerial lift could only reach the ninth floor, leaving the woman with no option but to let go and fall into a rescue basket just 1.5 metres wide. Bystanders applauded as the woman was brought to safety.
Rescue praised as 'a real nail-biter'
A fire brigade spokesperson described the operation, saying: 'That was a real nail-biter. You don’t experience something like this every day.' The rescue was part of a larger response to the incident, which saw at least 13 people injured, mostly from smoke inhalation. Five individuals were taken to hospital after the team evacuated all 113 residents of the building.
The cause of the fire remains unclear. Firefighters reported that the inside of the 11th floor had been badly damaged by smoke. Footage shared by the Berliner Morgenpost showed the exterior of the 11th-floor flat and the five floors above charred black by the blaze.
Road closures and a second fire
In the aftermath, Straße der Pariser Kommune was closed between An der Ostbahn and Rüdersdorfer Straße. Meanwhile, a separate fire broke out in a 10-storey block of flats in the Märkisches Viertel district of Reinickendorf at the same time. The fire service said, 'The situation was similar, but not as dramatic,' noting that the blaze started on the fifth floor and spread to the sixth. One person was taken to hospital, and six of the 96 flats in that high-rise are now uninhabitable.
The incidents highlight the dangers of high-rise fires and the challenges faced by emergency services in urban environments. Both fires are under investigation, with authorities working to determine the causes and assess the full extent of the damage.
