Two Bodies Found in Eryri Mountain Search for Missing Men

Two bodies have been recovered from the Eryri mountain range in North Wales following an extensive multi-agency search operation for two missing young men. The discovery was made by mountain rescue teams and coastguards who combed the challenging terrain near Yr Wyddfa under severe winter conditions of snow and ice.

Search Operation in Full Winter Conditions

Concerns were initially raised on Wednesday for the welfare of two men, aged 19 and 20, prompting North Wales Police to task rescue teams. The Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team, alongside colleagues from Aberglaslyn Mountain Rescue Team, RAF Mountain Rescue Team, SARDA, and HM Coastguard, launched a coordinated effort to locate the missing individuals.

Jurgen Dissmann, chair of the Llanberis mountain rescue team, expressed profound sadness at the outcome. ‘On behalf of Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team, I would like to extend our most heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the two men who have tragically lost their lives,’ he stated. ‘Volunteers searched across challenging mountain terrain in snow and ice, working long hours through the night in difficult weather in an effort to locate the pair as quickly as possible.’

Formal Identification and Family Notification

Both recovered bodies have now been formally identified, and their families have been informed. Dissmann emphasized the determined commitment of all involved, noting that despite sustained efforts, the outcome was not what rescuers had hoped for. He extended sincere thanks to all assisting agencies for their invaluable support throughout the operation.

Separate Search on Ben Nevis

In a separate incident, police in Scotland are conducting a search for a missing hiker on Ben Nevis. Brian Mcgillicuddy, 64, was last seen at 4am on Glasdrum Road in Fort William. He is described as an experienced hill walker who failed to return from his planned excursion.

Sargeant Paige Macdonald issued an appeal for information, stating: ‘Brian is an experienced hill walker, but he did not return from his planned hike and has not been heard from since. I am appealing to anyone who may have seen someone matching Brian’s description to please come forward with information, no matter how small it may seem.’ Mcgillicuddy was reportedly wearing a white climbing helmet, a dark blue jacket, and white jeans at the time of his disappearance.

These incidents highlight the inherent risks associated with mountain activities, particularly during winter months when conditions can rapidly deteriorate. Mountain rescue teams continue to emphasize the importance of proper preparation and caution when venturing into remote and challenging environments.
