An 18-year-old man from London has died after getting into difficulty in the sea at Camber Sands in East Sussex on Sunday evening. Sussex Police confirmed the incident occurred just before 7pm, when three people were reported to be in trouble in the water.
Emergency response and rescue efforts
Emergency services launched a large search operation at the beach near Rye. Two of the three individuals, a 16-year-old boy and a 24-year-old man, managed to get out of the water safely. However, the third person, aged 18, was pulled from the water at approximately 7.30pm.
Despite immediate lifesaving attempts by paramedics at the scene, the young man was pronounced dead a short while later. "Inquiries in the area remain ongoing and an increased emergency presence is visible at this time," a police spokesperson added. The beach at Camber Sands has a history of dangerous currents, and this tragic event underscores the risks associated with swimming in unsupervised areas.
