A 25-year-old man was shot and killed in Clapham, south London, on Monday night, and a 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after seeking hospital treatment for gunshot wounds. Police were called to reports of gunfire in Clapham North just before 10pm on August 10, and despite paramedics' efforts, the older man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Forensic Operation Underway
A significant forensic operation is ongoing at the junction of Landor Road and Willington Road, where a police forensics tent remains in place. According to the Press Association, a bouquet of flowers has been placed near the entrance of The Landor Pub. Photos from the North Clapham residential street show multiple cordons and forensic tents as crime scene investigators work.
The 22-year-old man, who remains in hospital, has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Detective Chief Superintendent Emma Bond, Central South Borough Commander, said: “We understand that incident will cause concern within the local community and an increased police presence will remain in the area throughout the day as our enquiries continue. Our thoughts remain with the victim’s family for their tragic loss.”
Community Reaction
Residents reported hearing “four or five” gunshots near the scene. Pastor Lorraine Jones-Burrell told MyLondon: “The scenes of body tents, blood and forensic evidence in our communities are horrifying and deeply traumatising. In our inner-city communities, where residents and families live so closely together, the impact of such violence reaches far beyond the immediate crime scene.”
She added: “It is the school summer holidays, and many children who have not travelled away will be waking up and looking out of their windows to this horrific scene. No child should have to witness this. It is heartbreaking.”
Appeal for Information
Bond continued: “Officers have arrested a man on suspicion of murder, and we are working tirelessly to establish what happened. We are asking anyone with information or anyone who may have witnessed the shooting to please contact us as soon as possible and support the ongoing investigation.”
Police have urged witnesses to contact them on 101 quoting reference 8379/10AUG. Information can also be provided anonymously to independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. The investigation continues, with an increased police presence expected in the area throughout the day.
