The family of a 16-year-old girl killed in a tragic car crash that plunged into a river in Cambridgeshire has paid a heartfelt tribute, describing her as the "kindest, most loving girl" they could ever wish for. Eden Bunn lost her life after the vehicle she was traveling in left the road and entered the River Nene near Wisbech on Tuesday evening, March 17, 2026.
Details of the Devastating Incident
Eden Bunn was among five individuals in a blue Volkswagen Polo that veered off the road on North Brink in Wisbech St Mary's at approximately 8:20 PM. The car subsequently entered the River Nene, leading to a frantic emergency response. Divers recovered Eden's body on Wednesday, but the search continues for 18-year-old Declan Berry from Wisbech, who is believed to have been driving the car at the time of the collision.
Family Tributes and Emotional Statements
In a moving statement, Eden's parents, Lisa and Dean, along with her brother Jay, sister Shelby, and nephew Axl, expressed their profound grief. They emphasized that Eden's horses, Daisy and Dolly, were her world, and she was theirs. The family added that words cannot capture the tragedy that will linger until they reunite with her.
Meanwhile, Declan Berry's family and friends have described themselves as "absolutely devastated beyond words" as the search for him persists. Detective Inspector Craig Wheeler of Cambridgeshire Police noted that the search could be prolonged due to the challenging conditions of the river, calling the collision "truly devastating" for all involved.
Injuries and Ongoing Investigation
Three other occupants of the vehicle managed to escape and were transported to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King's Lynn with injuries that were not life-threatening. As of Thursday, a 16-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man have been discharged, while another 16-year-old girl remains hospitalized. Eden Bunn, from Sutton Bridge in Lincolnshire, was reportedly a rear-seat passenger during the incident.
Emergency Response and Community Impact
At least a dozen emergency services personnel were deployed to the scene, with a white forensic tent visible on the riverbank on Wednesday. Detective Inspector Wheeler has appealed to the public for any information, urging witnesses who saw the collision or the blue VW Polo in the Wisbech area between 7 PM and 8:20 PM on Tuesday to contact the police. The investigation is still in its early stages, but authorities are working diligently to piece together the events leading to this heartbreaking accident.
