More than 100 firefighters are battling a major blaze at a waste facility in Dagenham, east London, with thick black smoke visible for miles. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) was called to the site on Chequers Lane at approximately 3:26 AM today, and crews remain on the scene working to bring the fire under control.
Scale of the Incident
Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters have been deployed to the industrial estate near the A13. Specialist equipment, including two turntable ladders, a hose laying unit, and a high volume pump, is being used to access water supplies across the ground and tackle the flames from height.
Station Commander Graham Beers, who is leading the response, said: “This is a large incident that will see crews working hard through the morning to bring it under control. Residents in the nearby area should keep doors and windows closed where possible. The fire is producing a significant amount of smoke.”

Local residents have been urged to keep windows and doors shut to prevent smoke from entering their homes. The thick black smoke is billowing from the site and could be seen from a distance, raising concerns about air quality in the surrounding areas.
The cause of the blaze is not yet known, and an investigation is expected to begin once the fire is fully extinguished. Firefighters are likely to remain at the scene for several hours, dampening down hotspots and ensuring the site is safe.
Context of Drought and Heatwave
The fire comes as London and large parts of the South of England are experiencing drought conditions, with a fifth heatwave of the season bringing more hot weather this week. The dry conditions may have contributed to the rapid spread of the fire, although this has not been confirmed.
