A suspected chemical leak at Moorways Sports Village in Allenton, Derbyshire, forced the evacuation of the waterpark on Thursday afternoon, with 12 people treated for breathing difficulties.
Incident Details
Emergency services were called to the leisure centre on Moor Lane at 1:38pm after reports of a potential chemical leak. Firefighters from Ascot Drive, Kingsway, and Nottinghamshire's Stapleford stations attended, supported by a specialist Environmental Protection Unit from Stockhill.
Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the leisure centre was evacuated as a precaution. Around 12 people were reported to have breathing difficulties and were assessed by paramedics from East Midlands Ambulance Service.
Response and Closures
Moorways released a statement saying: 'We are temporarily closed for the rest of today. All swimming lessons, water park visits and any other bookings for today are cancelled. We will provide a further update at a later time. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.'
Derbyshire Constabulary also attended the scene. Osmaston Park Road was closed to the junction with Moor Lane, and motorists were advised to avoid the area and find alternative routes.
Ongoing Investigation
The cause of the chemical leak is under investigation. The fire service's Environmental Protection Unit is working to identify the substance and ensure the site is safe. No further details on the condition of those affected have been released.
