Londoners are being hit by a persistent 'summer cold' that is causing sore throats, high temperatures, and fatigue, with symptoms lasting at least four days. The illness has prompted a spike in Google searches for 'flu' and 'flu symptoms' over the past month, as many take to social media to describe their ordeal.
What Are the Symptoms?
The most commonly reported symptoms include a sore throat, temperature, achiness, and tiredness. One Londoner posted: "Me and all my friends have gotten individually ill in the last week. Seems there is some gross summer cold travelling around at the moment. Haven’t left the house since last weekend, and seems my cold is just getting worse by each day!" Another added: "My team at work has had it this week, passed on at an event we attended." A third commented: "Yes!!! Took out my entire family for a week!"
Is It COVID-19?
Given the overlap with COVID-19 symptoms, many wonder if the summer cold is actually the coronavirus. However, as Dr. Greenyer, a private doctor at the Health Suite, explained to MyLondon: "Throughout the year, there are multiple viruses that come and go, and often, there can be clusters. COVID is one of many viruses that circulate through the natural population every year. With these viruses, you can't tell initially what it is because there's a lot of crossover with symptoms."
He added: "It's hard to pin down a particular virus without getting tested but as most patients get better with no treatment, they don't get tested. It's usually only the patients who are very unwell and are admitted to the hospital who get tested."
How Long Does It Last?
Most people recover within 10-14 days without needing medical intervention. Dr. Greenyer advises: "General medical advice would be good self-care, get plenty of rest, fluids, a balanced diet, because all these things help the body to heal, regardless of what the cause is."
Staying Hydrated in the Heat
With temperatures high, staying hydrated is crucial. The daily recommendation is to drink two to three litres of water, and even more when sick. Water helps maintain blood pressure and circulation, aiding the body's natural detoxification.
When to Seek Medical Help
If symptoms persist beyond two weeks or worsen, contact your GP, NHS 111, or in emergencies, 999. Pharmacists can also offer advice and recommend flu remedies.
Prevention and Vaccination
Current COVID-19 vaccination guidelines suggest that those over 75, or aged 6 months to 74 with a weakened immune system, or living in a care home for older adults, can request a vaccine.
As London continues to bake, taking care of your health is paramount. Rest, fluids, and a balanced diet remain the best defenses against this summer's unwelcome visitor.
