Snog scabs, also known as beard rash or beard burn, are an unexpected consequence of passionate kissing with a partner who has facial hair. Coined by TikToker Claire Marie, the term refers to red, irritated rashes that develop on the skin after snogging someone with stubble or a beard. Claire Marie told Metro that her recent scab was her 'most intense' and that it typically takes multiple offences to appear. She is considering adjusting her kissing style to avoid future issues.
What Causes Snog Scabs?
Emma Coleman, a dermatology registered general nurse (RGN), explains that snog scabs are officially known as friction dermatitis. 'Coarse stubble acts like sandpaper, creating tiny micro abrasions on the skin,' she says. 'There can be a particularly nasty reaction if the person affected has pre-existing eczema or sensitive skin.' In some cases, it can flare into contact dermatitis or mild bacterial folliculitis if the follicles get irritated. The repeated rubbing strips away the skin's protective layer and leads to inflammation.

Rovie Hernandez, 28, a Londoner, shares that he is 'currently recovering one from the weekend.' He says it only happens when he kisses men with stubble rather than full beards. 'Every time I’ve kissed a man with stubble I’ve had a rash pop up. It usually only lasts for a few days but it’s quite irritated,' he told Metro. Thousands of videos on social media show similar experiences, from minor facial irritation to severe burns. In July, TikTok creator @minalovesyousm racked up over five million views documenting her extreme beard burn, which resulted in part of her chin skin being rubbed off.
Treatment and Prevention
Nurse Emma advises using a dermatologically-approved moisturiser, avoiding harsh products, and letting the skin rest. A cold compress for 10 to 20 minutes every two to three hours can help, as can skincare products with chamomile and aloe vera. If the rash is blistering, painful, or not settling, a GP visit may be necessary. 'A short course of mild steroid cream may be required in particularly bad cases,' Emma adds.
Explaining Snog Scabs
Explaining a snog scab to friends and coworkers can be awkward. One teacher, Lucy, from Cambridge, developed a snog scab after a second date but luckily crashed her bike that weekend, allowing the rash to blend in with her bruises. 'Every cloud, right?' she said.
