Manchester City midfielder Rodri could face an extended period on the sidelines due to a back injury that may require surgery. The 30-year-old Spain captain, who led his nation to a 1-0 World Cup final victory over Argentina in New Jersey and won the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player, is now set to miss the start of the upcoming season.
Injury-plagued seasons continue
This latest setback follows two injury-hit campaigns. Rodri ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in a 2-2 draw with Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium in September 2024, ruling him out for most of that season. He then suffered another injury at the Club World Cup in July 2025, followed by hamstring and groin issues last season, limiting him to just 17 Premier League starts.
Rodri's contract with City expires next June, and his future at the club remains uncertain. While he has expressed a desire to play in Spain again and is thought to favor a move to Real Madrid, the Spanish giants have yet to make a concrete offer. New City manager Enzo Maresca hopes to retain the midfielder.
Rodri's resilience
After the World Cup win, Rodri spoke about his struggles with injury. "For me, it's been a very tough time," he said. "I just want the new generations to see my example as an opportunity. When you go down, you can rise again. This is my philosophy for my entire life. Of course, sometimes things go well, things go wrong, but always the positiveness."
Leeds in talks for Trafford
Meanwhile, Leeds United are in advanced discussions to sign goalkeeper James Trafford from City for a fee in the region of £50 million. The 23-year-old rejoined City from Burnley last summer for £27 million, expecting to be first choice, but was displaced by Gianluigi Donnarumma following the Italian's arrival from Paris Saint-Germain. Trafford started City's Carabao Cup final victory over Arsenal in March and the FA Cup final win over Chelsea in May.
