Person Shot by Law Enforcement Near Washington Monument, Secret Service Says
An individual was shot by law enforcement officers on Monday near the Washington Monument, the Secret Service confirmed. The incident occurred shortly after Vice President JD Vance's motorcade passed through the vicinity.
According to Matthew Quinn, deputy director of the Secret Service, plainclothes officers first identified the individual as suspicious and believed he was carrying a firearm. They called for support from uniformed agents. When the individual spotted the uniformed officers, he fled on foot, drew a weapon, and fired at them.
"They returned fire and engaged," Quinn stated. "That individual was hit, and he's since been transported to the hospital." Quinn declined to disclose the person's condition. The circumstances surrounding the shooting, which took place near 15th Street and Independence Avenue, remain unclear. Quinn noted it is uncertain whether Vice President Vance was a target.
A juvenile bystander was also reportedly shot but sustained non-life-threatening injuries, Quinn said. The juvenile is receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.
The Secret Service urged the public to avoid the area as emergency crews responded to the scene, located not far from the White House, where President Donald Trump was hosting a small business event. The White House was briefly placed on lockdown while authorities investigated. Secret Service personnel escorted journalists who were outside into the briefing room, and President Trump continued his event without interruption.
