The family of an elderly Dutch couple who tragically passed away after contracting hantavirus during a cruise has expressed their profound grief, describing their 'beautiful journey together' as having been 'cut short'. The couple, both aged 69 and from Haulerwijk, died after falling ill on the ship, which has been linked to the deadly virus.
A family member, speaking through the Dutch publication Namens de Familie, issued a heartfelt statement requesting privacy during this difficult time. 'The beautiful journey they experienced together has been abruptly cut short,' the statement read. 'We cannot yet comprehend that we have to miss them. We want to bring them home in peace and remember them.'
The family also pleaded with the media to refrain from publishing any names, images, or personal details of the deceased or their relatives. 'We request that the media not share any names, images, or personal details of them or our family,' the statement added.
The husband died aboard the cruise ship, and his body was brought ashore on the remote island of Saint Helena, located in the South Atlantic Ocean. His wife, who had been receiving medical treatment, passed away in a hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa, while being repatriated to the Netherlands. Her body remains in Johannesburg at this time.
This incident has drawn attention to the risks posed by hantavirus, a rare but often fatal disease transmitted through rodent droppings. Early symptoms include fever, muscle aches, and fatigue, which can progress to severe respiratory issues. The couple's death is part of a broader outbreak on the cruise, which has seen multiple fatalities and left passengers in distress.
The family's statement underscores the emotional toll of such a sudden loss, as they now focus on bringing their loved ones home and honoring their memory. The story remains under development, with further details expected to emerge as investigations continue.
