A 31-year-old man was arrested at London's Heathrow Airport after a drunken outburst on a British Airways flight forced the pilot to abort takeoff. The incident occurred on Flight BA275, bound for Las Vegas, as the aircraft, an Airbus A350 carrying over 300 passengers, was approaching the runway.
Footage shared on social media shows the passenger, dressed in a blue T-shirt and grey tracksuit bottoms, becoming agitated and rising from his seat in the Club World business class cabin, where tickets can cost up to £7,000. A female crew member repeatedly told him to 'stay seated, sir' and 'listen to instructions,' but he ignored her and grew increasingly abusive, hurling expletives at staff and fellow passengers.
Crew member's brave intervention
The crew member warned the man, 'If I have to tell you again, I will be restraining you, sir, if you do not stay seated.' Despite her efforts, he continued to cause disruption, leading to the aborted takeoff. The passenger was pushed back to his seat several times but remained defiant.
Another passenger, who recorded the incident and posted it on Instagram under the handle @bou_dnb, described hearing 'a load of noise coming from the back from some drunken idiot.' He praised the air hostess, saying, 'Fair play to the air hostess here, because she absolutely held it down,' and called for her to receive a raise.
Armed police escort and arrest
After the plane returned to the terminal, armed police boarded and escorted the man off the aircraft in handcuffs. The footage of his arrest has been liked over 170,000 times on Instagram, with users like @viralvideo.club calling the crew member 'an absolute hero' and @tjalife adding, 'I hope she gets all the recognition she deserves.'
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed to the Daily Mail that officers were called following reports of a disruptive passenger. 'The plane returned to the terminal to allow officers to board the plane,' they said. 'A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of being drunk onboard an aircraft and failing to obey the commands of the pilot. He remains in police custody while further enquiries are carried out.'
British Airways response
In a statement to Metro, a British Airways spokesperson said: 'Disruptive or abusive behaviour is never tolerated on board, and the safety of our customers and crew is our highest priority. When these incidents occur, the appropriate action will always be taken.'
The incident highlights the challenges cabin crew face in managing disruptive passengers, especially on long-haul flights. Business class seats on such routes can be highly lucrative for airlines, but safety protocols remain paramount.
