Police authorities in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, have made eight arrests following a disturbing and brutal attack on a capybara, the world's largest rodent species. The incident, which was captured on security camera footage in the Ilha do Governador neighborhood, occurred before dawn on Saturday and involved a group of assailants beating the animal with sticks and iron bars.
Shocking Act of Animal Cruelty
Felipe Santoro, the police commissioner leading the investigation, described the crime as "brutal" and one that "shocks society." He emphasized that the capybara posed no threat whatsoever, yet was subjected to extreme and deliberate cruelty. The attack has sparked widespread condemnation and highlighted ongoing concerns about animal welfare in the region.
Identification and Arrests
Through meticulous review of CCTV footage, police were able to identify the attackers, including two minors, and swiftly arrested them on Saturday. A police statement confirmed the arrests, underscoring the seriousness with which authorities are treating this case of animal abuse.
Medical Treatment and Recovery
The victim, a 65kg (143lb) male capybara, was transported to the Wildlife Care Center (CRAS) at Estacio University in south-western Rio for urgent medical attention. Veterinarian and CRAS head Jeferson Pires expressed his shock, noting that in 22 years of treating Rio's wildlife, he had never encountered a capybara subjected to such severe aggression.
Pires reported that the animal is showing signs of improvement but is suffering from significant injuries, including head trauma, swelling with internal bleeding around the left eye, and multiple back wounds. The capybara remains under close observation and care at the center.
Cultural Context and Online Fame
Capybaras, semi-aquatic rodents native to South America, have recently gained a devoted online following. One popular meme, "Comrade Capybara," portrays the animal as a communist revolutionary, inspired by a 2021 incident where capybaras "invaded" a luxury gated estate in Argentina built on their former wetland habitat.
This attack comes amid heightened awareness of animal welfare issues in Brazil, following public outrage in early January over the death of a stray dog beaten by teenagers. The capybara case has further galvanized calls for stronger protections and enforcement against animal cruelty.
