A dog that spent nearly three weeks stranded on a Lake District mountain has been rescued. Teddy went missing on August 2 after disappearing on Helvellyn, England’s third-highest peak. On August 21, volunteers searching for him heard barking coming from Dry Gill, a steep ravine on the mountain’s slopes, and found Teddy stuck. The Keswick Mountain Rescue Team was called in, and after a three-hour operation, Teddy was freed with no obvious injuries, though he had lost significant weight.
Rescue operation details
The rescue involved seven team members and took three and a half hours. Teddy was secured in a rucksack and given a small amount of food before being carried down to Swirls car park, where he was reunited with his owner and taken to a vet for a check-up.
Community reaction and outcome
Keswick Mountain Rescue Team said in a statement: “The team are absolutely delighted to share this update, as the news of this missing dog had deeply affected so many people across our local community. He was given a small amount of food before being safely secured in a rucksack for the journey back down to Swirls car park.” They added: “A remarkable outcome after nearly three weeks on Helvellyn, and a huge well done to everyone who kept searching and never gave up on Teddy.” The rescue marks the end of an ordeal that had gripped the local community, with volunteers and team members refusing to give up hope over the three-week period.
