Sadiq Khan Condemns Thames Water's Sewage Practices
Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan has strongly criticized Thames Water for its ongoing sewage discharges, labeling the situation as "unacceptable" while stopping short of endorsing public ownership of the troubled utility. Recent data reveals that Thames Water has recorded 79,000 hours of sewage spills so far this year, marking the highest level since 2020 and raising significant environmental and public health concerns.
Green Party Pushes for Nationalisation Amid Public Outcry
Green Party leader Zach Polanski has intensified calls to nationalise Thames Water, spurred by the Channel 4 documentary Dirty Business, which exposed systematic illegal dumping and regulatory failures. During a City Hall meeting, Polanski pressured Deputy Mayor for Environment Mete Coban to back public ownership, but Coban only stated that Londoners should not bear the cost of Thames Water's failures without committing further.
Khan's Stance on Regulatory Action and Financial Implications
In an interview with MyLondon, Khan emphasized the need for regulatory intervention, urging Ofwat to use its authority to hold Thames Water accountable. He expressed skepticism about nationalisation, questioning the financial burden on taxpayers. "Are we really asking the taxpayer that's been ripped off for the last few years by Thames Water to now be giving massive checks to shareholders?" Khan remarked, highlighting his focus on lobbying the government for alternative solutions rather than supporting a takeover.
Recent Fines and Local Impact of Thames Water's Failures
Thames Water's issues extend beyond sewage discharges, with the company fined £123 million by Ofwat in May 2025 for violations related to spills and shareholder dividends. A recent flood in Islington caused extensive damage, with local businesses reporting losses up to £50,000. Islington Council leader Una O'Halloran criticized Thames Water for "years of neglect and inaction," calling for immediate improvements. MyLondon has reached out to Thames Water for comment, but no response has been provided yet.
