London's burgeoning wellness scene is set to receive a significant new addition this summer, as an Olympic-sized lido complete with state-of-the-art saunas prepares to open its doors in the heart of Canary Wharf. The project, named Sea Lanes Canary Wharf, represents a major investment in outdoor aquatic leisure and Scandinavian-inspired wellbeing for the capital's residents and visitors alike.
A Freshwater Oasis on the Thames
Scheduled to welcome its first swimmers in June 2026, the development will feature a substantial 50-metre freshwater swimming pool that will actually float on the surface of the Thames at Eden Dock. This innovative design ensures that bathers will not be swimming directly in the river itself, but rather in a completely separate, naturally filtered freshwater environment that is rigorously tested against EU Bathing Standards.
The pool, which measures 1.3 metres in depth and includes six designated swimming lanes, has been designed with accessibility and safety as paramount concerns. Ramps will provide easy access to the site, while trained lifeguards will be on constant duty to supervise all aquatic activities. This thoughtful approach means the facility aims to cater to a wide demographic, from casual dippers seeking a refreshing plunge to dedicated cold-water swimming enthusiasts pursuing their training regimens.
Wellness Beyond the Water
Beyond the impressive lido, the complex will boast two spacious, glass-fronted saunas that offer panoramic views across the dock. A notable feature is that these saunas will be entirely powered by renewable energy sources, aligning the project with contemporary environmental priorities. The accompanying community clubhouse will serve a variety of food and drink options, while also functioning as a hub for wellness events and activities.
A particularly innovative service will be the provision of a wetsuit concierge, designed to ensure a comfortable and chafe-free experience for those braving the cooler waters. The team behind the venture, the National Open Water Coaching Association, brings considerable expertise to the table, having successfully operated the Sea Lanes Brighton facility since its launch in June 2023.
Joining London's Wellness Wave
This new development arrives at a time when London has wholeheartedly embraced various Nordic wellness trends. The capital has witnessed a proliferation of cold-water plunge spots, outdoor lidos, and communal sauna facilities in recent years, from community projects in Stratford to temporary pop-ups like the Summer Splash at the Royal Docks. Sea Lanes Canary Wharf is poised to become a flagship destination within this growing movement.
Joe McNulty, Director at Sea Lanes, has described the forthcoming venue as 'an urban oasis for health and wellbeing', emphasising the goal of creating a space where Londoners can forge connections with nature, their local community, and their own personal wellness journeys. While specific pricing details for memberships and pay-per-swim options are still to be finalised and announced, anticipation is building for the summer launch of what promises to be a standout addition to London's leisure landscape.
