Hackney Tops London with 34 Green Flag Parks, Beating Westminster and Richmond
Hackney Leads London with 34 Green Flag Parks

Hackney has officially secured the title of London's greenest borough, leading the capital with the highest number of Green Flag parks. The borough now boasts 34 accredited parks after Clapton Common received Green Flag status this year, up from 33 in the previous year.

Hackney's Green Spaces Vital for Dense Population

As one of London's most densely populated boroughs, access to green spaces is crucial for Hackney residents, many of whom lack private gardens. Popular parks such as London Fields, Daubeny Fields, Clissold Park, and Well Street Common are among those recognized as top-tier green spaces.

Cllr Jacob Cable, Cabinet Member for Climate, Clean Air, Energy and Transport, said: "Everyone deserves access to top-quality green spaces, close to home. That’s why we are so incredibly proud that 34 of our parks have been recognised as among the best in the country."

Recognition for Park Teams and Volunteers

Cable added: "This achievement is a credit to the hard work of Hackney’s parks team, alongside the many parks user groups, volunteers and partners whose care and dedication make our parks a haven for nature and residents alike."

Paul Todd MBE, Green Flag Award Manager at Keep Britain Tidy, said: "We are delighted to see 2,391 parks and green spaces cross the UK achieve Green Flag Award status this year. Every winner should be incredibly proud of this achievement."

Impact on Community Wellbeing

Todd emphasized the importance of parks: "Parks and green spaces play such a vital role in our communities, bringing people together, reducing loneliness, creating safe, free spaces for children to play and allowing everyone equal access to nature, all of which has a proven impact on our wellbeing and quality of life."

Westminster came second with 33 Green Flag parks, followed by Southwark with 30. At the other end of the spectrum, Enfield and Bexley each had only one Green Flag park in their entire boroughs.
