London's Cable Car will glow pink and blue this October as part of a special remembrance event supporting families affected by baby loss. The event, hosted by Transport for London (TfL) and Footprints Baby Loss charity, will take place at the London Cable Car on Wednesday, October 14, during Baby Loss Awareness Week, which runs from October 9 to 15.
Event Details and Activities
The initiative aims to provide a space for reflection and remembrance while raising awareness of baby loss across the capital. The event will offer families a space to reflect, remember, and connect with others who have experienced similar loss, with the cable car cabins set to be illuminated in pink and blue throughout the week.
Running from 10am to 4pm, the event will include guest speakers, memory-making activities, and information and support from a range of baby loss charities. Families will also have the opportunity to light a candle in memory of babies who have died, and take a quiet, reflective ride on the cable car above the River Thames. Tickets are free but must be booked in advance through Eventbrite.
Statements from Organizers
Fiona Jones, head of the London Cable Car for TfL, said: "We are proud to work with Footprints Baby Loss charity and many others to host this important event during Baby Loss Awareness Week. The London Cable Car provides a unique and reflective setting where families can come together to remember their babies, access support and connect with others who have shared similar experiences. We hope the event offers comfort, understanding and a sense of community to everyone attending."
Sharon Darke and Suzie Scofield, founders of Footprints Baby Loss Twin & Triplet Support, said: "We are so pleased to partner with TfL for this important Baby Loss Awareness event. Providing a dedicated space where families can come together, remember their babies, and find tailored peer support is at the heart of everything we do. We are really looking forward to meeting families and remembering our babies together."
Raising Awareness and Honoring Families
The event not only offers support and remembrance but also raises awareness of the impact of baby loss and the need for compassionate care and understanding. The illumination of the cable car cabins is intended to visibly mark the experiences of families and to light up the capital in their honour.
Alicia Burnett, CEO of Black Baby Loss Awareness C.I.C, said: "I started Black Baby Loss Awareness Week in 2023, as a space to centre Black and mixed Black heritage families, who are among the most disproportionately impacted by perinatal loss, yet often overlooked, in the fight to prevent baby loss and improve care for bereaved families. What began as a grassroots campaign shaped by my own experience as a bereaved Black mother, has grown into a nationwide movement co-ordinated by Black Baby Loss Awareness C.I.C. Our focus remains clear: to amplify the voices of bereaved Black families, highlight examples of care and support that saves babies’ lives, and improve Black communities’ awareness of baby loss support services."
The event is part of a broader effort to support bereaved families and encourage open conversations about baby loss, with the cable car's pink and blue glow serving as a visible symbol of remembrance across London.
