The devastating floods in Kenya have now claimed the lives of 88 individuals, according to government reports, with the crisis escalating as two major rivers overflowed their banks, leading to widespread displacement and disruption. More than 34,000 people have been forced from their homes, and the floods, which began earlier in March, have impacted at least 21 countries across the region, highlighting the scale of this natural disaster.
Transport Disruption and Government Warnings
On Monday, the Nyando River in western Kenya overflowed, submerging critical sections of the Ahero Bridge along the Kericho-Awasi-Kisumu road. This has severely disrupted transport in the area, prompting the government to issue urgent advisories for motorists to avoid the flooded route and seek alternative roads. A statement emphasized the particular danger during nighttime hours, when it becomes challenging to accurately assess the depth and strength of the flowing water, posing significant risks to safety.
Intensified Rescue Efforts and Evacuations
Rescue operations, spearheaded by the Kenya Red Cross Society, have ramped up in the worst-affected regions. In the Nyando area alone, rescue teams have successfully evacuated more than 200 people and over 200 livestock, with at least two families pulled from immediate peril. Among those rescued were six unaccompanied children, who are now receiving care. Authorities are also working to evacuate more than 900 students from the Ahero Girls National School as floodwaters continue to rise, underscoring the urgency of the situation.

At least 265 households have been affected in the Nyando region, as confirmed by Kenya's Ministry of Interior and National Administration on Tuesday. Displaced residents are being sheltered in various public facilities, including government offices, churches, and health centres, to provide temporary relief. The flooding has extended beyond Nyando, with reports from Tana River county indicating that the River Tana has burst its banks, flooding farms in Mbalambala and surrounding areas like Asako village, threatening local food production and livelihoods.

In Uasin Gishu county, a multi-agency team is currently assessing the impact of rising water levels along the Sosiani River in Lower Elgon View, where residential and hospitality facilities have been compromised. This broader regional impact underscores the extensive nature of the floods, affecting multiple counties and necessitating coordinated response efforts. The situation remains fluid, with continuous monitoring and rescue operations essential to mitigate further loss and displacement.
