An autumn walk in Kent, starting at The George Inn near Faversham, offers views of the 13th-century Leeds Castle and a stop at a 17th-century pub, all within an hour of London. The 4.3-mile circuit, which takes about 1 hour 30 minutes, is accessible by train or car from Bromley South.
Walk details and route
The walk begins at The George Inn, a former coaching inn built in 1652 and now managed by Shepherd Neame brewery. It features an open fire and nostalgic photos, making it a suitable stop before or after the walk. The route leads through the village of Leeds, along Burberry Lane, and into the surrounding countryside.
Two route options are available: a longer 4.3-mile circuit taking roughly 1 hour 30 minutes, and a shorter 3.9-mile circuit completed in about 1 hour 15 minutes. Both routes pass through the village of Broomfield, including its historic church, and cross the River Len before reaching the castle estate entrance.
Leeds Castle highlights
Leeds Castle, previously named one of the UK's best castles by The Telegraph, has a history dating back to the 13th century. The first fortress was built by Robert de Crevecoeur, and it later served as a royal palace for King Edward I and Queen Eleanor of Castile, as well as a residence for King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. In the 20th century, it became the home of American heiress Lady Baillie, who transformed it into a luxurious retreat before it opened to the public in 1976.
Visitors can explore historic interiors, landscaped grounds and gardens, the yew maze and grotto, falconry displays, and outdoor activities around the estate. The longer route continues through the castle grounds, passing parkland and the golf course, and offers close views of the castle and its moat. The shorter route provides views across the castle lake, where the landmark is reflected in the water.
Final stretch and pub reward
The final stretch takes walkers past Leeds and Broomfield Cricket Club, through church grounds, and back into Leeds village before returning to the pub. The George Inn's terrace is described as an ideal spot to relax after the walk, with the option of a drink or meal.
