Deadly storms in China kill 15: typhoon, tornadoes, landslides

Severe storms across China have killed at least 15 people, with Typhoon Maysak causing six deaths in Guangxi Province and tornadoes in Hubei Province killing 11. The extreme weather has triggered widespread flooding, landslides, and infrastructure damage.

Typhoon Maysak devastates Guangxi

Typhoon Maysak brought heavy rains and strong winds to southern China, causing the Liulan Reservoir dam to breach in Hengzhou, Nanning, Guangxi. Floodwaters submerged houses, trees, and streets, prompting the evacuation of 130,000 residents. The government allocated 100 million yuan (approximately $14 million) for disaster relief. Rescue teams waded through waist-deep water to evacuate stranded residents, while riverside parks and walkways were inundated.

Tornadoes strike Hubei Province

In central China, thunderstorms and tornadoes hit Huanggang City in Hubei Province on Monday, killing 11 people. The tornadoes destroyed buildings, including a logistics park, and left debris strewn across residential areas. Firefighters and rescue workers cleared debris and helped residents retrieve valuables from damaged homes. The central government provided 50 million yuan (about $7 million) to Hubei for infrastructure restoration.

Landslides and highway damage

In addition to flooding and tornadoes, landslides damaged a highway in Qingshan village, northwest of Hangzhou. Emergency restoration work was underway to repair the road. Mud covered streets in Linjiang village, Hengzhou, as floodwaters receded.

Impact and recovery efforts

China's National Meteorological Center continued to issue warnings for further heavy rain in affected regions. Rescue operations remained active, with workers clearing debris and restoring power and communication lines. The combined death toll of 15 underscores the severity of the storms, which have also disrupted transportation and damaged crops.
