Police warn against open water risks amid heatwave
Superintendent Glen Ward of Cleveland Police stated: 'I would like to remind everyone that open water comes with serious risks. We know it is inviting in the hot weather, but we would encourage people to refrain from entering any open water at all. Today we have sadly seen the true tragedy that can happen as a result. Please take extra care and enjoy the warm weather as safely as possible.'
Multiple water-related deaths during hot weather
This incident follows a series of water-related deaths in recent days amid scorching temperatures. Derbyshire Constabulary announced that the body of an 18-year-old man was recovered from the water near a weir at the Darley Abbey Mills complex after two teenagers got into difficulty. Greater Manchester Police reported that an 18-year-old male died at Dovestone Reservoir, Oldham, on Friday.
The Met Office reported that the UK is experiencing its third heatwave of the year, with temperatures exceeding 30°C in many areas of England and Wales over the weekend and into the following week. 2026 marks the first year to record 35°C on six separate days, breaking the previous records set in 1976 and 2020, when five days exceeded 35°C.
Wildfire warnings and international incidents
Natural England warned that parts of the UK are at 'exceptional' risk of wildfires, particularly in southern England and the Midlands. Derbyshire Fire and Rescue has responded to two moorland wildfires in recent days, while London Fire Brigade dealt with a blaze involving shrubbery at Stratford Station on Friday evening, causing rail line closures.
In Spain, hundreds of firefighters battled one of the country's deadliest wildfires in Almeria province, which killed at least 12 people. According to regional authorities, four of the deceased are believed to be British.
