Kilburn Library's £1.14m Revamp: Victorian Building Reopens After Structural Overhaul
Kilburn Library Reopens After £1.14m Refurbishment

Kilburn Library, a cherished Victorian institution on Salusbury Road in Brent, is poised to welcome back the public next month following an extensive £1.14 million refurbishment. The building, which had been closed since July 2025 due to significant structural concerns, has undergone a comprehensive transformation to address safety issues and modernise its facilities for the community.

Addressing Structural Concerns and Safety Issues

The decision to close the library last year came after alarming reports described the 130-year-old building as being "in a poor state". Officials had raised serious concerns about potential hazards, including the risk of falling debris from large cracks in the structure. Brent Council's Corporate Director of Resident Services had previously warned that without intervention, the building would become "increasingly unsafe and costly" due to ongoing wear and tear.

A Comprehensive Modernisation Project

The renovation project has completely revitalised the library's interior and functionality. Key improvements include:

  • A dedicated digital zone equipped for studying, working, and digital learning
  • Expanded study spaces to accommodate students and remote workers
  • A completely refreshed and updated book collection
  • Hireable community spaces featuring screens and Wi-Fi for meetings, courses, and events

Enhanced Children's Facilities and Community Focus

One of the most significant transformations is the new children's area, specifically designed to "spark curiosity and support early learning". This space incorporates interactive, tactile sensory elements and will host enhanced BookTrust story and rhyme sessions for under-fives, including new monthly Saturday sessions to increase accessibility for working families.

Funding and Community Impact

The ambitious refurbishment was made possible through strategic funding arrangements:

  1. £783,000 from Brent Council's Strategic Community Infrastructure Levy (SCIL), generated from charges on new developments
  2. £231,500 from Arts Council England

Cabinet Member for Customer Experience, Resident Support and Culture, Councillor Promise Knight, expressed enthusiasm about the reopening: "We are thrilled to welcome everyone back to the new Kilburn Library. This refurbishment is a testament to our commitment to providing inclusive and accessible services that bring people together."

Knight added: "The enhanced facilities will support learning, creativity and connection across our vibrant community. We can't wait to see Kilburn Library become a hub for inspiration, collaboration and culture for years to come."

A New Chapter for Community Engagement

The February 2 reopening marks a significant milestone for Brent's cultural and educational infrastructure. The council emphasises that the renovated library will serve as more than just a book-lending facility – it's designed to become a dynamic community hub supporting learning, creativity, and social connection across all age groups.

The transformation from a structurally compromised building to a modern, safe community asset represents a substantial investment in local infrastructure and demonstrates the council's commitment to preserving historical buildings while adapting them for contemporary community needs.
