West Hampstead Primary School Praised in Ofsted Report for Strong Education
West Hampstead Primary Praised in Ofsted Report

West Hampstead Primary School is celebrating after Ofsted inspectors praised the "strong" education provided to its youngest and most disadvantaged pupils. The school, located in Dornfell Street, was visited by inspectors in June, with the report published this month.

Inspectors Highlight Strengths in Early Years and Inclusion

After speaking with pupils, teachers, and parents, inspectors concluded that the school met a "strong standard" in early years provision and inclusion. It also achieved the expected standard in leadership, personal development, wellbeing, teaching, attendance, behaviour, and achievement.

Inspectors described the early years provision as a "highly positive start" to children's education and commended the school's focus on pupils with experience of social care, who were "supported to thrive." They also praised the school's work with pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds or those with special educational needs and disabilities.

The report noted: "Leaders identify pupils' barriers to learning quickly when they join the school. Leaders and staff are highly committed to ensuring that all pupils have equal access to learning."

School Community and Pupil Engagement

West Hampstead Primary has 409 pupils, with an above-average 42.7 per cent eligible for free school meals and 15.4 per cent requiring special educational needs support. Inspectors observed that "pupils arrive at school each day ready to learn and they enjoy being part of the school community."

They added: "All pupils have opportunities to take part in the full life of the school, including sporting events, residential visits and trips to museums and theatres. Leaders view these experiences as an entitlement for all pupils, including those who are disadvantaged. Pupils are motivated and engaged by their learning and feel well supported by staff. As a result, pupils are keen to attend regularly. They speak highly of everything the school offers and are keen to show off the school to visitors."

New Playground Completed and Headteacher's Vision

The school last year launched a fundraising initiative called Together We Run with the Parent-Staff Association to raise funds for the redevelopment of the Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 playground. The new playground has just been completed in time for the autumn term.

Headteacher Sam Drake, who writes a regular column for the Ham&High, has stated: "At West Hampstead Primary School (WHPS), we believe that every child, regardless of their starting point, deserves to be challenged in their learning journey. There can never be a 'one size fits all' approach to lessons, as each child brings their own unique set of skills, experiences, and potential. Incorporating challenge into every lesson is essential for fostering a love of learning and ensuring all children thrive."

On the school website, Drake writes that West Hampstead - formerly Beckford School - is "an inclusive and aspirational school at the heart of the community," adding: "We foster an atmosphere of mutual respect, tolerance and high regard for all members of society and for one another."
