South London Bar Becomes 'Home Away From Home' for Australian World Cup Fans
South London Bar: Aussie World Cup 'Home Away From Home'

A South London bar has become a cherished gathering place for Australians watching the World Cup, offering a true 'home away from home' experience. The Garden in Vauxhall, located in South West London, has emerged as a vibrant hub where expats celebrate their national team with passion and camaraderie.

A Slice of Down Under in Vauxhall

Chants of 'Aussie, Aussie, Aussie; Oi, Oi, Oi' echo through The Garden, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of Federation Square in Melbourne. For many Australians relocating to London, Clapham and Vauxhall are often the first destinations, and The Garden has become a favorite watering hole. The venue, in partnership with the Facebook group 'Aussies in London', hosted a sold-out event for Australia's second World Cup match against the USA.

Fans Share Their Experiences

Bec Dumesny, a 30-year-old who has lived in London for three years, highlighted the unique camaraderie: 'It's nice to come together in a place and it's something special, when you know and see Aussies around, it's that camaraderie you can't get anywhere else. Having a shared goal that supports the team and that true team spirit is really nice.' She noted that South West London's parks, riverside location, and vibrant community make it an ideal base.

Fraser Cooks, now living in Surrey, returned to The Garden for the World Cup after first visiting four years ago. 'This feels like a home away from home. It's always sold out. Everyone enjoys it, it's a great event,' he said.

Community and Belonging

Even Australians who have moved away from South West London make the journey to The Garden. Bianca Harrington, who moved to London nine years ago and now lives in North London, said: 'It's nice to be around your fellow countrymen. Hearing all the Australian-isms and lingo that you haven't heard in ages - it feels good to be back around my countryfolk.' Her partner Josh McGuinness added, 'You go to where your people are.'

Three friends, Danny, Damo, and Jarrod, agreed that The Garden has always been a great spot for Australians. Danny recalled, 'I came down for the last World Cup and it's always good vibes. It's nice to have all the Aussies in the right place.' Damo humorously declared, 'It's coming home - but to Australia.'

The Appeal of South West London

Robert 'Bobby' Caldwell explained the appeal: 'People like their communities. Making that jump to the other side of the world. London is tough, especially from October to March as we are all suffering through winter because it's summer back home. But when that first sunny day comes, everyone knows they're going straight to the park and to the pub, and suddenly everyone's smiling; that feeling you don't get in Australia because you don't go through that suffering. As Aussies, we love the outdoors. The proximity of this place to Clapham is perfect and we love days like this because we've missed it over the last six months.'

The Garden Vauxhall is showing every game of the World Cup, and it's clear that this venue has become a true home for Australians in London.
