A 24-year-old footballer was killed and 12 others injured when lightning struck a rain-soaked pitch in southern Thailand during a regional tournament match. The bolt hit Safwan Awae, a winger for Sam Colt, in the penalty area at Santiphap Stadium in Narathiwat province on August 4.
Fatal strike during monsoon match
Footage captured the moment lightning struck Awae, enveloping him in smoke as players from both teams scrambled to help. Medics rushed to the scene, and Awae was taken to hospital in critical condition but later died. Police chief Thun Sirikhunt confirmed the death, stating: 'Although the emergency medical team made every effort to save him, the victim succumbed to severe injuries sustained in the incident.'
The match was part of the Golok Cup, featuring local and mixed amateur teams from Thailand and Malaysia. Among the injured was Malaysian footballer Alif Ezzahan Zulkifli, 22, who was treated in the Sungai Golok district. Twelve others suffered burns from the electrical discharge.
Victim's recent career move
Awae had recently signed as a semi-professional for FC Yala on July 30, competing in the Thai League 3 Southern Region. He played as a forward and winger. In a tribute on Facebook, FC Yala wrote: 'Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed, to Him we will return. Condolences to the family of Safwan Awae, the new player of FC Yala.'
