Margot Robbie's Wild Night Out at London's Infamous Infernos

Australian actress Margot Robbie has confessed to achieving what many would consider nearly impossible: getting kicked out of London's legendary Infernos nightclub in Clapham. The 35-year-old star, currently preparing for her role in the upcoming adaptation of Wuthering Heights, shared this surprising anecdote from her early years living in the UK capital.

From Soap Star to London Party Girl

After rising to fame on the Australian soap opera Neighbours and spending several years in the United States, Robbie relocated to London in 2014. During a recent appearance on the Table Manners podcast with hosts Jessie and Lennie Ware, the actress revealed how her fascination with Infernos began through friends she met while working in Belgium.

"They would tell me about the infamous Infernos," Robbie recalled. "They explained: 'You can't get kicked out of there, you can do anything in Infernos, and you can't get kicked out.' And I was like, 'Wow, that sounds like paradise.'"

The Night That Defied Expectations

The reality proved quite different when Robbie and her friends visited the club during a weekend trip to London. "We went to Infernos, and within about 15 minutes, we got kicked out," she revealed. As security personnel escorted them from the premises, Robbie protested loudly: "But this is Infernos, you can't get kicked out of Infernos!"

The bouncer responded matter-of-factly: "Look, we allow most things, but when your friend does [redacted], then we kick you out." Robbie admitted she accepted this explanation with a simple "Okay, fair enough!"

A Pattern of London Nightlife Misadventures

When asked if this was an isolated incident, Robbie confessed to being ejected from "most of the clubs in Clapham" during that period of her life. "Yeah, for a while we were banned at a number of places!" she added with apparent amusement.

This nightclub experience became part of a larger London adventure that Robbie has described as "the best days of my life." Despite her rising Hollywood profile following her breakout role in The Wolf of Wall Street alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, she embraced what she called a "student life" in Clapham.

The Clapham Commune and London Lifestyle

Robbie's connection to Infernos became so significant that it influenced her living arrangements. After the Belgium job ended, she and her friends decided to move in together, specifically choosing a property "down the road from Infernos." She explained: "We literally signed our lease just because it was down the road from Infernos."

This shared house, affectionately nicknamed "The Manor," became home to seven people including Robbie's now-husband Tom Ackerley and her Lucky Chap production company co-founders Sophia Kerr and Josey McNamara. The group reportedly even considered getting matching "house tattoos" to commemorate their time together.

Infernos: An Australian Institution in London

Infernos has operated on Clapham High Street since 1985, becoming something of a pilgrimage site for Australians and New Zealanders living in London. The carpeted nightclub gained additional fame through its appearance in The Inbetweeners Movie and features unique attractions including a kissing corner and confession booth.

The venue has even acknowledged its most famous patron with a Clapham Heritage plaque that reads: "Margot Robbie. Star of stage and screen. Actress, icon, dancing queen. Forever Infernos." For many Antipodeans, the club represents a rite of passage, with nights out often justified by the reasoning: "If it's good enough for Margot, it's obviously good enough for us."

London Memories and Lasting Impressions

Robbie has frequently reflected fondly on her London years, telling interviewers: "For me, where you live and what you do have to be simplistic and comfortable, otherwise how are you possibly going to relax? Clapham has always felt unassuming in the sense you're just left alone to get on with who you are, and that's perfect for me."

Her co-star Alexander Skarsgård once described Robbie's London lifestyle: "She was living in a house with six other people, kind of a frat-house vibe, and on weekends she'd go to Amsterdam and sleep in bunk beds in a youth hostel, or to some music festival in northern England and sleep in a tent. She's not precious at all."

It was during this period that romance blossomed with Tom Ackerley, though they initially kept their relationship secret from housemates. "Our house turned into The Jerry Springer Show for a moment," Robbie recalled. "Everyone was, like: 'No! This is going to ruin our group!' But the dust settled, and it was all good."

From London Parties to Hollywood Premieres

Robbie also shared an amusing anecdote about trying to convince her local off-license owners of her celebrity status. After inviting them to the premiere of her film Focus co-starring Will Smith, the owners remained skeptical despite seeing an invitation with her photograph. "They didn't believe me," she explained. "They now know that I work in the movies, and sometimes we go back and visit, just to say hi."

The actress, who once declared "I seem to love a lot of British things. I love Harry Potter, I love my husband and I love Love Island!" has since moved to Los Angeles with Ackerley, whom she married in 2016 before welcoming their son in 2024. Yet her London adventures, particularly those involving Infernos, remain cherished memories that she has suggested could inspire a film about "my first year living in London."
