Popular Westminster Cocktail Bar Seeks Extended Hours Until 2:30am
A well-known London cocktail bar has submitted a formal application to Westminster City Council, requesting permission to remain open until 2:30 in the morning, seven days a week. The establishment, DIVE, located on Blandford Street in the Marylebone area, also seeks authorization to play recorded music until 2am. Currently, the basement venue operates until midnight from Monday through Thursday, until 12:30am on Fridays and Saturdays, and closes at 11pm on Sundays.
Resident Opposition and Noise Concerns
The licensing proposal has generated significant controversy among local residents, with many expressing strong objections. One resident described the potential extension as creating an "unbearable situation" for those living on Chiltern Street, arguing it would reduce daily "quiet hours" to merely four. Another objector emphasized that while daytime noise from shops and cafes is expected, late-night hospitality operations are unacceptable in a predominantly residential neighborhood.
Additional complaints highlighted fears of increased noise disturbing infants, disrupting residents' sleep, and attracting larger crowds that could lead to anti-social behavior. One particularly concerned individual stated they were "horrified" by the application and hoped council officials would recognize its unreasonableness.
Council and Environmental Health Objections
Marylebone councillors have formally objected to the application, submitting a group letter to Westminster City Council. They argue the proposed hours extend "too far beyond Core House" of midnight and stress the necessity of balancing business interests with residential quality of life. The council's own environmental health team has also raised concerns, indicating the extended operations would likely result in increased public nuisance and compromise public safety.
Support for the Application
Despite the opposition, the application has received some letters of support. Supporters describe the bar's owners as "responsible and well-managed operators" who provide a valuable service to the community. One supporter specifically noted that a 2am closing time would allow DIVE to offer "a relaxed and responsible setting for late-night refreshment and food" in the area.
Application Details and Upcoming Decision
The licensing application has garnered 10 formal objections and 5 letters of support. DIVE is operated by Triangle Orchestra Limited and occupies a space formerly known as Purl London, situated beneath a café. Westminster City Council is scheduled to review the application on Thursday, February 26, 2026, where a final decision will be made regarding the proposed extended hours.
