Endeavour Deptford: A no-frills dive bar with brilliant weirdness
Endeavour Deptford: Brilliant weird dive bar

Endeavour, a bar on Deptford Broadway, has been awarded five out of five stars by Time Out London. The venue operates under a name taken from a long-forgotten business sign discovered during renovations, but unlike some establishments that craft a vision around such history, Endeavour simply thought 'yeah, that'll do.' The result is a brilliant and weird space.

Atmosphere and design

Inside, Endeavour resembles a Manhattan or Barcelona-style bar—dark, long, and unfussy, like two shipping containers arranged end to end. High tables sit at the back, while window seats offer views of four lanes of traffic. However, better people-watching is found inside, with patrons resembling characters from The Cramps or Neil Young in a wizard's hat.

Simple offerings

Simplicity defines Endeavour. The bar offers a limited selection, with Staropramen at five pounds a pint being the highlight. There are three individual toilets, each covered floor-to-ceiling in graffiti, and notably lacking toilet seats. No food is served, but the pints are cold.

Underground performance space

Downstairs from the main bar lies a basement performance space, painted scarlet red and smelling mustier than a forgotten gym bag. On a weeknight, a band played grebo rock at tinnitus-inducing levels to half a dozen people. The same space hosts weekly comedy night Laugh Bath, showcasing up-and-coming comedians and new work by established acts. Other events include a psych night called Can You Dig It.

According to the reviewer, Endeavour 'just keeps doing its thing—and its thing is brilliant and weird.'
