Sombr Halts London Show to Criticize O2 Academy Brixton as 'Most Poorly Managed Venue'
Fast-rising popstar Sombr has launched a scathing attack on the O2 Academy Brixton, branding it the "most poorly managed venue" he has ever performed at after being forced to stop his sold-out show mid-song to assist a fan in distress. The 20-year-old NYC-born indie-pop singer-songwriter, whose real name is Shane Michael Boose, made the dramatic statement during the final night of his three-night residency at the iconic London venue from March 8-10, 2026.
On-Stage Intervention Sparks Safety Concerns
Fan footage circulating online captures the intense moment when Sombr abruptly halted his viral hit "Back to Friends" to address the crowd after spotting an audience member who appeared to faint. "Alright, stop the show, guys, there's someone passed out over here," the artist shouted, prompting his band to cut the music immediately. He then directed sharp criticism toward venue security, emphasizing that "safety comes first" and calling their inattention "insane."
The crowd responded with cheers of support for Sombr's intervention, with many concert-goers later taking to social media to share similar negative experiences from the three-night stint. Multiple fans reported witnessing other attendees fainting throughout the shows, alongside complaints about "abysmal" entry queues and "rude" staff behavior. One attendee commented on the oppressive heat inside the venue, suggesting a need for air conditioning, while another praised Sombr for speaking out about the management issues.
Venue's Troubled History and Recent Reopening
This incident adds to the ongoing scrutiny surrounding O2 Academy Brixton, which was the site of a devastating crowd crush in December 2022 that resulted in the deaths of two individuals. Following the tragedy, Lambeth Council imposed an initial three-month suspension, citing "shambolic" security procedures. The venue eventually reopened in April 2024 after investing approximately £1.2 million in maintenance and safety improvements and agreeing to meet 77 stringent conditions set by authorities.
These conditions included mandatory welfare training for staff, the establishment of a comprehensive emergency operations plan, and the implementation of a people counting system. However, notably absent from the requirements were any specific measures addressing ventilation or air conditioning. Since reopening, performances by artists such as Chappell Roan, Addison Rae, Yungblud, Pink Pantheress, and LCD Soundsystem have faced similar criticism regarding excessive heat levels during events.
Sombr's Mixed Messages Post-Show
Despite his vocal criticism on stage, Sombr omitted any mention of the safety issues in a subsequent Instagram tribute to London. He posted, "London Night 3. I love you so much. Thanks for an unforgettable past 3 nights. I'll be back London," focusing instead on positive aspects of his visit. The Brit-nominated artist also thanked Joe Jonas for joining him on stage for a rendition of DNCE's "Cake By The Ocean," following a duet with Niall Horan the previous evening.
Academy Music Group, which operates the O2 Academy Brixton, has been approached for comment regarding Sombr's allegations and the ongoing concerns about venue management and attendee safety. The incident highlights persistent challenges for one of London's most famous music venues as it continues to rebuild its reputation following the 2022 tragedy.
